Active Ingredients & Properties
“Nothing but the goodness of 100% pure Northern Ugandan shea butter!”
How does it behave? (Properties)
Our pure shea butter has a creamy colour, a natural nutty smell and is easily absorbed by the skin. The product is solid at room temperature, and will melt at a temperature of 37°. It melts readily in your hand while applying. Just be aware to keep it away from a direct heat source.
Shea butter contains unique properties that set it apart from the whole nut-oil family:
Shea butter has an exceptionally large healing fraction (also called nonsaponifiable fraction) in comparison with other seed oils (between 5-17% for shea butter compared to 1% for other seed oils). This healing fraction contains important nutrients and vitamins which are required for healing, and explains the beneficial use in skin treatment like eczema, skin allergies, scars, sunburns, wrinkles and other skin conditions.
Besides from the healing fraction, seed oils contain a moisturizing fraction (or saponifiable fraction), which contains most of the moisturizing properties. The natural moisturizers in shea butter are comparable to the moisturizers produced by the sebaceous glands of the skin that protect and nourish the skin from drying.
Shea butter naturally contains anti-inflammatory properties, due to the cinnamic acid derivatives present in the product. Cinnamic acid is known for its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties while reducing inflammation. This is why shea butter will have a soothing effect when applied on skin rashes, minor burns and insect bites, and reduces the redness. In addition, cinnamic acid absorbs some of the skin damaging ultraviolet light generated from the sun.
Our pure shea butter is rich in vitamins:
- Vitamin A slows down the ageing process and appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, by stimulating the production of healthy skin collagen necessary for skin tissue repair. It is an antioxidant, which helps to protect your skin from free radicals, pollution and sun damage.
- Vitamin E is another antioxidant. This vitamin enhances the microcirculation to the skin, which results in an increased blood supply to and from the skin, making your skin look healthy and radiant.
- Vitamin F or essential fatty acids promote the natural production of collagen in the skin and slow down
the ageing process. - Vitamin K plays a key role in skin elasticity. It will help the ageing and damaged skin look younger and reduces the severity of bruising and under eye circles.
